Samaipata, a small town in Bolivia, is known for its rich history and natural beauty. It offers a wide range of activities that make it a great destination for both outdoor lovers, culture enthusiasts and everyone looking for a relaxed village to chill for some days. One of the top attractions in the area is El Fuerte de Samaipata, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to pre-Inca times.

El Fuerte de Samaipata, also known as the “Fortress of Samaipata,” is an archaeological site located on a hilltop overlooking the town. It features a large rock carving that is believed to have been used for ceremonial purposes. You can explore the ruins and learn about the history of the site. Additionally, the surrounding area offers amazing panoramic views of the valley and mountains, making it a great spot for hiking and photography.

Aside from El Fuerte de Samaipata, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. You can take a dip in the Las Cuevas Waterfalls, visit the Museo Arqueológico to learn more about the region’s history, or take a stroll through the charming town center. With so much to see and do, Samaipata is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Bolivia.

Samaipata is located roughly 120 km to the west of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. There are plenty of buses going from Santa Cruz to Samaipata all day long, however, it’s easier to find a bus in the morning. Buses leave when they are full and cost around 30bs. The ride takes roughly 3 hours depending on the traffic. Buses can be found in the location below:

To get here from the city center you can take linea 44 (local mini-bus transport for 2bs). These buses drive counter-clockwise over the inner ring of Santa Cruz so you can hop on anywhere.

Historical Significance

El Fuerte de Samaipata was built by the Chané people around 300 AD. The site was later used by the Inca and Spanish empires for religious and military purposes. The site contains a large rock sculpture that is believed to represent a jaguar, a sacred animal in Andean culture. The purpose of the sculpture is not known, but it is thought to have been used for religious ceremonies. The origens of the rock are still unknown to this date. Apparently there’s a theory that it could be a fossilised spaceship (personally I really like the theory, although it seems a bit unreal).

How to Get There

El Fuerte de Samaipata is located about 10 kilometers from Samaipata. The easiest way to get there is by car. You can find taxi’s in the main square of the village. The price of a taxi is around 100bs and will take 4 people. This includes waiting at the entrance for 2 hours to take you back to the village. Some hostels also offer transportation to El Fuerte.

You can also opt to take a taxi to the fort and walk back down to the main road and hitchhike (or take a taxi) back to Samaipata. This allows you to see a few additional attractions on the way back down including a colibri research centre (entrance fee 25 bs).

The entrance fee for El Fuerte is 50 bs for foreigners and 25 bs for Bolivians, make sure to keep the ticket with you as it will also give you free access to the Museo Arqueológico in Samaipata. (pictures below)
